Buying a belt by length instead of by guessing

Four strap lengths, printed waist ranges, and the measurement people take in the wrong place.

Measure over the trousers

Put the tape through the belt loops of the trousers you actually intend to wear, not around your bare waist and not around your hips. The number that comes back is your belt waist, and it is typically one to two inches larger than the waist size printed on the trousers.

The four lengths in this range

Strap lengthWaist range coveredComment
39 inRoughly 26 to 30 inThe shortest option. Runs out quickly above 30.
43 inRoughly 30 to 34 inThe most common size in the range.
45 inRoughly 32 to 36 inOverlaps the 43. Take this one if you sit at 33 or 34.
51 inRoughly 38 to 42 inThe longest strap here.

Ranges are approximate and come off the listings. Where two lengths overlap, take the longer one: an inch of spare tail tucks away, an inch short does not appear from anywhere.

Grommet belts adjust in steps

The grommet belts in this range have fixed eyelet spacing, usually an inch or an inch and a quarter apart. That means the adjustment is not continuous, and if your waist falls between two eyelets you will be choosing between slightly loose and slightly tight. On a boundary measurement, size up and use the earlier hole.

Chain and hardware options

  • Detachable chain. Clips on and off, so the same strap covers a plain day and a loud one. The chain adds noticeable weight at the hip.
  • Single grommet row. The restrained version. Reads as a detail rather than a statement.
  • Double grommet row. The full punk look. Harder to pair with tailoring.
  • Silver or gold buckle. Match the metal to your watch and rings rather than to the belt.

PU leather and what to expect from it

These straps are polyurethane over a fabric backing rather than cowhide. That means no break-in period, consistent thickness, and a strap that holds its shape from the first day. It also means the material will eventually crack rather than patina, typically at the fold nearest the buckle. Keep it out of direct heat and it lasts a long time in normal wear.
