Before you choose

Read the sleeve size, not the outside

  • Outer dimensions tell you nothing about whether a 17 inch machine goes in. The padded sleeve is the number that matters, and it is printed on each listing.
  • Several models carry a USB pass-through. It is a cable route, not a battery. You still supply the power bank.
  • Water-resistant fabric sheds a shower. None of these are dry bags, and none of the zips are sealed.
  • The daypacks in this section are lighter and unstructured, which is what you want for a plane cabin and not what you want for a daily laptop commute.
  • Chest straps appear on the larger frames only. If you carry over 15 pounds regularly, check for one.
  • Trolley sleeves on the back panel let the pack ride a suitcase handle. Worth checking if you fly often.
